The Third Annual Hale'iwa Arts Festival Summer Event continues to grow and add activities throughout the Waialua and Hale'iwa areas. This year the Hale'iwa Shopping Plaza and Watamull Properties host our third annual presentation of Invited Artists Displays. Beverly Fettig, Lynn Boyer, Bridgette Coley and Ed Higa have graciously agreed to present their art to the public in a special showing for this summer's event. Works in oil, watercolor, and ceramic from the artists' collections will be on display from 10 am to 6 pm on July 22 and 23. Keiki Art will also be displayed at the former Ace Hardware site. Three collections of varied children's art will be offered for viewing. Petroglyphs designed by area school children celebrate the past, the present and their visions of the future. This showing, organized by local artist Bill Braden, represents a reflection of our home area through the eyes, hands, and souls of our children. Their works have not been judged nor juried, but the inspiration and creativity that has gone into this project are apparent, profound, and encouraging. Their arts deserves our reflection, appreciation, and praise. A second collection of children's' art was created by youthful artists for a competition sponsored by Save the Sea Turtles and presented at the Hale'iwa Harbor Artfest in early June 2000. This art contest was held in conjunction with Oahu Oceanfest, an annual islandwide event. The "Ocean" provided the theme for the contest and awards were made in several categories. We are pleased to present this fine showing of juried children's art as part of the summer event. Perhaps you will be among the first to discover a future Wyland! The third group of art by young people comes to us by way of Karen Scata, one of our committee chairpersons, and one of this year's participating artists. Her workshops with children and arts education programs at YMCA/YWCA activity centers suggested that the artworks created by her students deserved a broader audience. Karen felt that the Hale'iwa Arts Festival provided the ideal opportunity and venue for this collection of works by children from central Oahu. We know you will agree and thoroughly enjoy this exhibit. Encouraging and facilitating the creation and display of art by our youth is a major part of Hale'iwa Arts Festival mission statement. These offerings by future professional artists and arts hobbyists will bring a smile to your face and heart as you share their enthusiasm and talents. This is as it should be! Another special presentation by the Hale'iwa Arts Festival at the Hale'iwa Shopping Plaza is, for lack of a more descriptive yet brief title, what we have loosely named, "COMMENT ART." Friends and members of the Hale'iwa Arts Festival have consented to exhibiting a personal piece of art, perhaps a favorite or perhaps one that they feel is best left in a closet. That is for you to determine. You be the critic. Do you find the exhibited work thought provoking? What is your opinion of the piece? Does it stimulate any reaction from you at all? You won't be sure who brought their artworks in for your viewing and criticism, and you won't be told who the artist is, so your comments are based totally on your individual interpretation and artistic sensibilities. If, to you, it's junk, then say so, and why. If you feel more positively, then say that too, and why. Art is indeed in the eye of the beholder! So have fun! Sneak a peek at your neighbor's art! And be sure to share your opinions! |
